This is one of the most common observations for new owners. Mini-split evaporator coils are more compact than those in central systems, meaning they often prioritize lowering the air temperature (sensible heat) over removing moisture (latent heat).

The Solution: Don't worry about the specific number on the display. If you feel slightly warm or "clammy" at your usual setting, simply adjust the thermostat down 1 or 2 degrees until you reach your desired comfort level. Focus on how you feel rather than the digital reading.

Understanding Dehumidify Mode: Many systems include a dedicated dehumidify mode, often represented by a water droplet symbol on the remote. This mode operates similarly to cooling but with key differences designed to target moisture:

  • The system automatically slows the fan and compressor speeds to maximize the time air spends on the coil, which helps remove more latent heat (humidity).
  • To reach humidity goals, the system may continue to run even after the temperature setpoint is met, which can result in the space becoming quite cold.

No. In a multi-zone system (where multiple indoor units connect to one outdoor unit), the entire house needs to be in the same mode.

What happens if I mix them? This creates a Mode Conflict. The system will not be able to satisfy both requests simultaneously, and you will likely find that some units stop operating and enter a "standby" mode until the conflict is resolved.

We recommend the "Set It and Forget It" approach. Mini-splits are designed to maintain a steady temperature rather than "recovering" quickly from a hot or cold house. You will save more energy and stay more comfortable by leaving the system at a consistent setting or making only very small adjustments when you leave.

  • Fan Speed: Set this to "Auto." This allows the unit to choose the most efficient airflow for the room's current needs.
  • System Mode: Manually select "Heat" or "Cool." Avoid using the "Auto" system mode, as this can lead to delays and mode conflicts between different rooms. If you have one inside unit and one outside unit then Auto mode can be used. Often this will allow the system to stay within an approximate four or five degree range of temperature though.

If you think your system is not working properly and you observe "new" lights you've never seen before, try to capture a video of the lights to help our team with diagnostics.

Before contacting our service team, please perform these four troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check Your Filters: Ensure your indoor unit filters have been recently rinsed and cleaned. Dirty filters are the most common cause of performance issues.
  2. Check Your Breaker: Ensure the breaker for the outdoor mini-split unit is not tripped and is not in the "OFF" position. If it has tripped, you can try flipping it back to "ON" once.
  3. Verify Settings: Double-check your remote control or thermostat. Ensure the system is in the correct mode (Heat or Cool) and that your fan and temperature settings are where you want them.
  4. System Reboot: If the issue persists, try a minor electronic reset:
    • Locate your electrical panel(s). These may be inside or outside and there may be more than one.
    • Flip the breaker labeled "Mini-split AC" to OFF. Hopefully your breakers are labelled well. We can help if they aren't!
    • Wait 15 minutes.
    • Flip the breaker back to ON.
